What is Gardnerella Vaginalis?

It is a form of bacterial vaginosis - a condition in women where the normal balance of vaginal bacteria is disrupted by the increase of other more harmful bacteria. It's one of the most common vaginal infections in women.

How do you get it?

Although it's more common in sexually active women it's not considered a sexually transmitted infection. This infection can easily occur in women having a monogamous relationship and can be embarrassing as is often presents with a very fishy odour causing people to lose confidence with new relationships.

  • Thin greyish vaginal discharge occasionally with a fishy smell, particularly after intercourse

What can I do?

A urine test which we will post to you for next day delivery (if order received by 1600) after you have posted this back to our lab we will contact you with the result within 2-3 days. We recommend our OPTION 2 test, as there could be more than one infection at work.

What if it's positive?

Our Dr's can prescribe a 7-day treatment by post, which will clear it up. This treatment is safe to use in pregnancy. Occasionally the infection will recur and you may be advised to treat your partner too.
